With the temperature still hovering well above 30 degrees, Tuesday’s final match on Margaret Court Arena between flamboyant Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Denis Istomin from Uzbekistan provided a show worthy of the reputation built around the twilight sessions on this court.

In just under three hours of thoroughly entertaining tennis, it was Tsonga who finally reigned supreme, 6-4 3-6 6-2 7-5.

Both men brought great form into Tuesday night’s encounter. Tsonga, seeded sixth, reached the final in the year-end ATP World Tour Final in London and continued his run into the new year, winning the title in Doha before heading to Melbourne.

On the other hand, Istomin, currently ranked 60th, has had two solid results since arriving in Australia, making a quarterfinal in Brisbane and a semifinal in Sydney.
