Grand National Tips

Grand National Tips back in 2009 the rank outsider Mon Mome came in and threw the rule book out of the window but there are some simple rules to follow which can guide you onto a good horse when it comes to placing your Grand National bet.

Weight is an important factor, horses that weight over 11 stone are unlikely to complete the race and the only winner of the Grand National who weighed over this was Red Rum at 11st 3lbs. Go for a horse that weights between 10st 7lbs and 11st for your best chances.

The horse needs to have run, completed and preferably been placed in at least one of its last three races. This 3 mile steeplechase is tough going on any horse but one who has not even complete any of its last three races is unlikely to finish here.

Your horse needs to be at least nine years old; in 2008 and 2009 this was the perfect age as all the top three winners were aged nine. Ten is also a good age but never go below nine as they are too young and a seven year old is highly unlikely to even finish the race.

Keep the bets at home so to speak, pick a British or Irish horse, they are more likely to complete the race than a foreign bred one. The training for this type of race is gruelling and British and Irish horses are trained to deal with it whereas foreign horses are not.

Your horse should weigh no more than 11 stone, be nine to ten years or age and be of British or Irish decent, it also needs to have completed and preferably been placed in at least one of its last races. Although a rank outsider like the French Bred horse Mon Mome can come in to win from time to time it is unlikely to become the norm.
